What is the private Temazcal Experience like in Ka Xaan Temazcal?
When you arrive you will be warmly welcomed by the townspeople and taken to a short tour to the small village. You will learn about the Mayan culture, the importance of beans and corn in their daily life, early traditional tools used for meal preparation and you could actually see (and even participate in, if you want) the elaboration of hand-made tortillas.
At the end of the tour you’ll be taken to the Mayan altar where you will be part of a brief welcome ceremony led by the Shaman. In the meantime, you could drink “balché”, an ancestral beverage made of balché-tree root, honey, cinnamon and anise.
The Circle of Fire will be the next stop. Here you will be a witness of the Fire Ceremony; different scents, as copal, and the steam itself become purifiers that prepare you to receive the Temazcal. The Shaman will mention the cardinal points and pray to the Mayan Gods and Spirits for the purification of your body, mind and soul. Negative energies would be asked to go away so you can find the light in your life.
After that, one by one you get into the sweat lodge (the room is called Temazcal, too) and little by little the volcanic rocks are put in the middle of the room. Once they finished and everyone’s inside, the Shaman gets in and closes the door. In the darkness you could smell the scents of medicinal herbs, it will be really hot, the temperature will reach 38 °C. Now it’s time to get involve and join the chants and requests the Shaman is doing, this will last for about half an hour.
When the chants are over and you go out from the Temazcal some warm water will be poured over your body to high your energy level and complete the healing cycle. Then get ready to refresh your body and swim in the cold waters of the Cenote, this will close your pores and improve blood flow.
The experience ends in a little Yucatecan house made of logs and a thatched roof. You’ll have a traditional meal, hand-made tortillas and fresh drinks made with regional fruit.
All the activites takes around 2.5 hours, temazcal takes 30-35 minutes.
