Temazcal 4 door

Whether you are already in Tulum or you are still planning your next vacation here, one of the experiences you should not miss out on is a Temazcal in Tulum. Temazcals are purification and healing experiences that help you reconnect with yourself, Mother Nature and eliminate toxins from your body.

If you have participated at a temazcal before, we are sure this is a great option for you as well.

What is a 4 door temazcal?

Our Temazcal of 4 Doors, 4 times or also called Full Temazcal, is a Mayan ritual or ceremony of healing and purification in which the main objective is to sweat and eliminate all the toxins that are in our body, and is recommended for those who are looking for a deeper and more spiritual experience.

What does it consist of?

The Temazcal is an experience of deep purification and healing, it consists if receiving a steam bath for at least one hour divided in four times, meaning the curtain is opened 4 times or every 15 minutes to place more “abuelitos”(hot rocks) in the center of the temazcal. Each door represents one of the four elements of the universe: fire, air, earth, and water.

How long does it last?

The total duration of the whole experience is 2 hours and is performed as follows:

Check availability

First:

It begins with a welcome and a small demonstration of the preparation of tortillas, which will accompany your food at the end of the activities. You can participate in the preparation if you wish and learn how to make tortillas.
Duration: 10-15 minutes

Second:

We move on to the “circulo de caracoles” (circle of snails; big seashells that act like a horn when blown) to ask for permission from the Mayan gods and the universe. At this point the shaman starts blowing the “caracoles” to call the 4 cardinal points in the Mayan language: Xaman, Nojol, Lak'in and Chik'in.

We then go to the welcome altar where each cardinal point is represented with teacups in each corner. In the middle a fifth offering is placed, which represents the human being, which in the Mayan culture is the one who represents light and sustains the universe. In these teacups the sacred drink of the Maya, also known as balché, is given as an offering.
Duration: 15-20 minutes

Third:

We move on to the circle of fire. Here we recommend leaving belongings and footwear and to dress only in the clothes that will enter the temazcal. Once in the circle of fire, the shaman will be preparing you to enter the temazcal. This consists of a cleansing with aromatic herbs such as copal to purify your body, mind and soul, and at the same time ask permission from the earth, the universe and the Mayan gods to enter the womb of mother earth represented by the temazcal.
Duration: 15-20 minutes

Fourth

At this point you should already be relaxed, so let yourself go for the experience and leave your heart and mind open to receive this healing.

We move into the temazcal and once everyone is inside (shaman and his group), we begin to introduce the hot rocks into the center of the temazcal also called "abuelitos", which will help us to the physical and spiritual healing. The experience is accompanied by various spiritual and healing chants in Spanish. Every 15 minutes the curtain is opened to move more abuelitos/hot rocks into the center of the temazcal. At this occasion you can leave for a few seconds to breathe fresh air and drink water if you wish, then re-enter the temazcal, or simply wait inside until the curtain is closed again. This is repeated 4 times until concluding the whole experience, spending a total of 1 hour inside the temazcal. Enjoy it, open your heart and receive the best of this wonderful experience.
Duration: 60 minutes

Fifth:

Upon leaving the temazcal you will be showered with a jet of warm water to close the session. Afterwards you can head to the cenote; the perfect space to refresh your body, relax and close the pores of your skin. The cenote is not very big but it is perfect to relax your body's muscles, swim, observe the incredible formations and admire the fish and turtles that live there, thanks to the transparency of its waters (you can stay in the cenote as long as you wish).
Duration: as long as you need

Last but not least:

Finally and ending the experience we finish in dining room, where you are offered a rich traditional meal of the region consisting of chicken with spices, beans, rice and the tortillas we made earlier. If you have any dietary restriction or if you are vegetarian, let us know in advance, as the most important thing for us is that you feel happy, happy with new, better and renewed energy.
Duration: as long as you want
